The Valparaiso Series, Spain and Corbino Series, Tuscany 1994-1996
In 1994 I was offered a residency at the Fundacion Valparaiso in southern Spain and it was there that I was to complete the Corbino Series with the production of a book related to the experience. In addition, the view from the Fundacion which overlooked a stark and arid valley, inspired a substantial body of work in my sketch book. Several months later I was invited by the Fundacion to return so that I could develop the series, thus continuing and enhancing methods used in the later part of the Corbino sequence. Following the Spanish residencies were further summers spent in Italy. Each visit saw the commencement of a new series, which although in themselves were to remain incomplete they were to allow my expression to enter a new dimension of intensity and understanding. It was during the summer of 1996 on the hill looking back towards Corbino, that the formal landscape elements within my work were to disappear as I came to realise that they were no longer necessary for what I was trying to express.
